THE GUN
Ballistics tests of bullet fragments and at least one casing found at the scenes have linked the shootings to one gun and narrowed the field of weapons to a few possible makes. One often touted is the AR-15.

*Number produced: 7 million (AR-15 and military version)
*Round: .223 caliber
*Capacity: 20- or 30-round magazine
*Range: 1,300 feet
*General: Civilian version of the military M16, semiautomatic and can be fitted with a targeting scope.

WHAT POLICE KNOW
Authorities have been able to gather the following details about the sniper.
THE PATTERN
Details are sketchy, but certain consistencies about the gunman have emerged:
*Takes down each victim with a single bullet.
*Favors suburban gas stations. Four shootings were at or near gas stations.
*Chooses locations near major roads for quick getaways.
*May be taunting police. A tarot death card with the message, "Dear Policeman, I am God" was left near one scene, while another shooting brazenly occurred within the sight and earshot of a police officer.
*Has killed only on weekdays, mostly during the mornings and evenings.
