American Flight 77, the one that hit the Pentagon, took off from Dulles International Airport at about 8:10 a.m., flew west for 45 minutes, then turned back east and was spotted on radar over West Virginia at 9:10 a.m. Two F-16s scrambled from Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Va., at 9:35 a.m., but the American jet slammed into the Pentagon just two minutes later, at 9:37 a.m.
The flight that crashed in Pennsylvania left Newark for San Francisco at 8:10 a.m. and flew toward Ohio, but around the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, it turned abruptly back toward Pennsylvania.
When it crashed in Pennsylvania, no U.S. military jets were in the sky nearby, simply because they had never been notified to scramble, Weaver said.
