Вообще то тогдашний министр обороны США Роберт Макнамара в 1995-м признал, что 4 августа 1964 атаки на американские эсминцы не было:
"McNamara went to Hanoi in Nov. 1995 on what he said was an attempt to learn more about the origins of the Vietnam War. While there he met with Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, commander of North Vietnam forces in the war. In his postscript to the Tonkin Gulf Resolution and the disputed Aug. 4 attack, McNamara said that after meeting with Giap, "I am prepared to say, without a doubt, there was no second attack""

Насчет "второй атаки" из цитаты Макнамары - по американской версии, первый раз "Мэддокс" был обстрелян 2 августа.
