The revolutionary scramjet is launched, 30 July 2002 at Woomera in the Australian outback in the hope of developing a jet engine which can travel at eight times the speed of sound and which raises the possibility of Sydney to London flights taking only two hours. University of Queensland researchers said they were receiving data from the rocket, but were unable to say whether the experiment - which saw the rocket blasted 300 kms (190 miles) into the sky - was a complete success.
