the plane was shot down shortly after the UAV unit was deployed in Uzbekistan - quite possibly during the very first mission - and almost immediately after it crossed the Afghan border. What does this say about the readiness of Afghani air defenses and the threat they pose to aircraft operating at low to medium altitudes? Nothing good for anti-Taliban forces, I am afraid.
The loss of the UAV, although not particularly important when considered separately, becomes a possible sign of things to come, should the U.S. or its allies deploy ground forces in Afghanistan.
