The US Department of Defense (DoD) has approved the possible transfer of AIM-120C Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs) to Brazil, the first time the Pentagon has approved such sales to Latin America. In a 19 April announcement, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said it would approve the sale of 48 AMRAAMs and 12 F-16C/D Block 50 aircraft under a possible $909 Foreign Military Sale (FMS) contract.

Lockheed Martin Submits U.S. F-16 Proposal to Brazil

Brasilia, May 20, 2002 – Lockheed-Martin representatives today submitted a proposal to sell and deliver the latest version of the F-16 fighter aircraft and its accompanying armaments, including the AMRAAM beyond-visual-range missile, to the Brazilian Air Force to meet its modernization needs.

The proposal is being submitted via the U.S. Government’s Foreign Military Sales process, with a pledge to provide the on-going support of the U.S. Air Force and the F-16 industrial team led by Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Co.

The proposal includes the F-16 C/D Block 50/52 aircraft and the AIM-120C Advanced Medium-range Air-to-Air Missile (AMRAAM) system. The Department of Defense last month informed the U.S. Congress of the proposed sale.

“The F-16 sets the standard for fighter aircraft around the world, and Brazil’s selection of the U.S. aircraft would open the door to increased collaboration between our nations,” said Ambassador Donna J. Hrinak. “The decision by the Bush Administration to support the offer of this aircraft, with the associated weapons system, clearly demonstrates the level of trust and respect the United States holds for Brazil.”
