British documents reveal plans to kill Hitler
Secret British government documents released today show that Britain drew up elaborate plans during the Second World War to assassinate Hitler after getting detailed accounts of his movements.
The documents show that the plans concentrated on the time he spent at his mountaintop retreat at Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps.
They included using a top class marksman to shoot him during his daily stroll, or sending in a team of commandos by parachute.
Other suggestions included poisoning his tea or injecting him with bacteria.
But the ideas, drawn up in the later stages of the war, were abandoned after it was argued that his military blunders made him more useful alive than dead. .
