MID-AIR COLLISION OVER GERMANY
A Russian-made Bashkirian Airlines Tupolev 154 travelling from Moscow to Barcelona collided with a Boeing 757 cargo plane, operated by DHL, bound for Brussels over southern Germany yesterday at 22.35 UTC (23.35 local time) at flight level 360 (12,000 metres).
The mid-air collision occurred over the German airspace which is under the control of the Swiss authorities on the basis of a bilateral Agreement between the two States.
The exact circumstances of the accident are currently under investigation by the Swiss and German authorities.
Following notification of the collision, the EUROCONTROL Agency closely examined all the available information within EUROCONTROL.
The EUROCONTROL Central Flow Management Unit has verified that the flight plans of the two aircraft involved had been correctly processed and distributed.
Based on the available information, there is currently nothing to indicate that the introduction of RVSM, the Reduced Vertical Separation Minima, was in any way a factor in this accident. Both aircraft complied with technical and operational RVSM requirements. The height-keeping performance of both aircraft had been recently verified and shown to be well within limits. In fact, the Tupolev 154 had been observed flying over the height monitoring station in Linz (Austria) 30 minutes before the accident and the height-keeping performance conformed to the RVSM status. Similarly, the DHL Boeing had last been monitored on 30 June.
Furthermore, according to EUROCONTROL's records, both aircraft were equipped with the airborne collision avoidance system ACAS*.
