NRL Finder:

NRL Finder
Type

Air-launched deployable mini-UAV.

Development

Finder is an ACTD programme on behalf of the US Defense Threat Reduction Agency's Counter-Proliferation II (CP2) activity for the detection of chemical warfare agents. Its role is reflected in its name, which is an acronym for Flight-Inserted Detection Expendable for Reconnaissance. NRL was awarded a three-year development contract in May 1998, and a first flight was made on 22 March 2000. Eventual objective, scheduled for 2002, is planned to involve a pair of Finders, carried by a Predator UAV in underwing pods.

Airframe

Parasol-wing monoplane; mainly circular-section fuselage; conventional tail surfaces; pusher engine. No landing gear. Wings, tail surfaces and propeller blades fold for stowage in launch pod.

Mission payloads

NRL chemical warfare agent detection (atmospheric sampling) sensor, with data transmission back to host aircraft. Possibly, also, sample collection instrumentation. Available onboard power 180 W.

Guidance and control

From Predator ground control station. Finder will be released remotely from Predator wing pylon to descend to a low level and collect samples of a plume that systems aboard the Predator have indicated may contain chemical weapon agents. Directed by the GCS, the two UAVs will then co-operate to track the plume and gather meteorological and chemical data that can be used to predict the plume's path and resulting threatened areas.

Launch

Ejected from storage pod, then deploying folded wings, tail surfaces and propeller blades.

Recovery

After two hours, Finder follows Predator to a designated recovery site, where Finder makes an automatic landing.

Operational status

Development continuing.
