"By far the most serious hit was that on 'Q' turret at 1600 when the range was about 16,500yds. This shell which was estimated to have an angle of fall of about 20° to the horizontal, struck on the right upper corner of the left gun port, which was formed by the junction of the 9in centre face plate and the 3'/4in roof. A piece of 9in armour was driven into the gun-house and the shell also entered and burst about 3ft from impact over the centre-line of the left gun, after being deflected slightly on the gun collars. Everyone in the gun-house was killed or wounded. The front roof plate was blown off, and lay upside down on the port side of the deck about 12 ft from the turret, while the centre face plate was also dislodged and came to rest about 15ft abaft the turret and close to the ship's side. The left gun was damaged and later condemned, and many light fittings were damaged inside the gun-house. The centre and left sights were destroyed, as was the left Director receiver, though the right sight and Director receiver were intact. Fragments pierced three pressure pipes but all the hydraulic machinery remained operative even after the subsequent cordite fire, except for the radial crane presses. A fire occurred in the gun-house which the fire party thought they had extinguished from above. At the time of the hit, the right gun was in the act of loading, with the shell rammed home and the rammer back. As No 1 fell back dead, he pulled the gun-loading cage lever to `lower', and the gun-loading cage went down to 4ft above the working chamber with cordite in it. The left gun-loading cage was in the working chamber and loaded . Both waiting positions in the working chamber were loaded, while both central cages were down and loaded, and both magazine hoppers loaded with cordite."
