(This task unit became TG 31.2 for the Ulithi occupation.)

Also contributing to the destruction of the enemy force were some CVE planes. An observer from the Marcus Island had first seen the tanks and infantry gathering east of the airfield and then charging across it. Because of his position relative to the tanks and friendly troops, he did not fire the rockets he was carrying. Instead, he called for help, and several Wildcats and Avengers answered. A Petrof Bay TBM laid a 500-pounder in the midst of three tanks, effectively ending their participation in the fight. Other planes joined in. Although having no bombs left, “Hux” Huxtable swept in to strafe. Totally engrossed with his run, Huxtable didn’t realize how low he was until he saw, out of the corner of his eye, palm trees flashing by. He hauled back on the stick as hard as he could (his plane’s G-meter registered 9) and just skimmed over some trees. His blood pressure took several minutes to return to normal. In the meantime, the remaining tanks and what troops chose to close with the marines were soon chopped to pieces.
Though this counterattack had been crushed, it was only the first day of what would be a long, bloody battle. For the escort carriers and their fliers, the fight would not be particularly bloody, only one Marcus Island pilot and two planes being lost in combat and four other planes lost operationally. Flight operations at Peleliu were heavy the first couple of days, 366 sorties being flown against the island on the fifteenth and sixteenth, but operations tapered off rapidly after that.
Anguar was an even easier job. A total of 182 sorties were flown there on the seventeenth and eighteenth (D day and D plus one) and only 32 on the next two days. By the twentieth the 81st Division had no need of the CVE planes, and the “jeeps” ended their participation at Anguar. (с) William T. Y'Blood, Little Giants
