At 2035 on 23 May, Sunderland Z/201, commanded by Flight Lieutenant R.J. Vaughn, took off from the Flying Boat Base at Reykjavik and headed for the Denmark Strait to locate the Bismarck. He arrived at the scene at about 0555 and first spotted a County-class heavy cruiser, probably the Norfolk, which would have been closer to the approaching aircraft than the Suffolk, steaming at a speed of 28 knots on course 240°. Further ahead, Lt. Vaughn could see gunfire being exchanged between two lines of ships traveling on parallel courses at about 12 miles (24,000 yards) apart. The leading ship in the left column, i.e., the Hood, was seen to be on fire but still able to fire her main armament guns.
While approaching the German formation, Lt. Vaughn saw an explosion on the foremost ship in the port column of ships that had been on fire, witnessing the doom of the Hood at 0600. At about the same time, the Sunderland came under antiaircraft fire from the German ships and had to seek cloud cover.
When the Sunderland emerged from its cloud cover a couple of minutes later, only the tip of the Hood’s bow was still above water.
The Sunderland kept going in and out of cloud cover to avoid enemy antiaircraft fire, but still keeping the enemy squadron under observation.
