At the same time the British were informed of these instructions to Weygand in Beirut, the French also shared their version of Operation Pike with their ally.
One target in the Caucasus that the British ignored, but the French identified as a possible objective, was the manganese mining industry, or at least the port at Poti, through which a good deal of manganese was being shipped to Germany. Power plants at Baku, Batum, and Grozny, supplying a total of 201,000 kilowatts of electricity to the region, with Baku supplying over 50 percent of the total, were also thought to be promising. Other than these differences, the French plan was quite similar to Slessor's W. A. 106; that is, it identified the refineries themselves as the best targets for Allied bombers.
The French planners speculated that an offensive operation against Baku would be most suited for seven groups of Vickers Wellingtons, Handley Page Hampdens, or Armstrong Whitworth Whitleys, two groups of French LeO 451 bombers, and three groups of Glenn Martins.
These squadrons would operate, it was presumed, from Iraqi and possibly Turkish airfields. For attacks on Batum and Poti, the French would provide three groups of Maryland bombers, "operating from bases in Turkey (Diyarbekir, Erzerum and Trabzon), subject to the practicability of obtaining, equipping and supplying existing aerodromes or of providing new ones." It is apparent from the language of the French plan that procuring these facilities in Iraq and eastern Anatolia was not perceived to be an obstacle to the desire to strike at the USSR.
