The most common second language is Chinese. Almost one-in-five city residents (19.5%) speak one of the various Chinese dialects, with Cantonese the most common dialect (11.6%), followed by Mandarin (5.6%).
Four of the top five languages spoken in the City of Sydney are Asian with almost one-third (29.4%) of the residential population proficient in them.
With such a high proportion of city residents able to speak second languages, it is not surprising that Sydney has emerged as a popular regional headquarters for international call centres, particularly those dealing with Asia."
