"On 7 November Brig Gen Hansell sent an F-13 back to Tokyo to gather more information. The Japanese knew that 'snoopers' would be returning, so all Army and Navy air groups in the area were placed on stand-by. When the F-13 arrived, it was chased by more than 100 fighters, but at 32,000 ft it was beyond their reach. It went about its business and returned to Saipan with valuable aerial photographs."
100 истребителей безрезультатно гонялось за разведчиком на ~10 км.
И далее:
"Furthermore, the 'Tojo' had not been designed for high-altitude flying. Indeed, a its highest ceiling, the fighter literally only 'floated' in the sky, and instantly dropped hundreds of metres if a turn was made."
Да, потом 44й довели до кондиции - он смог забираться на 1000 м выше без снятия всего, что только можно было еще снять, как это было до этого. Появилась возможность делать несколько заходов для атаки, а главное - таранить 29е, что было одним из основных способов сбития, как, собсна, и у пилотов "45х", насколько я понял: "The twin-seat fighter Toryu, using two types of guns - fixed cannons and a circular gun mounted in the rear seat - was a fighter intended to attack enemy aircraft from below. When attacking a B-29 at a height of about 10,000 m, the Japanese aircraft would be near its performance limit.
The pilots would meet with many difficulties whilst try to perform these interceptions. Unskilled pilots would try to improve the Ki-45's flying performance by decreasing equipment and trying to ram their targets."
Среди "Б29борцев" следовало бы упомянуть "хьены" - они были как минимум одними из самых результативных в этой роли.
