Kazakh defence plant set to conclude profitable arms deal with India
[Presenter, over archive footage showing people at an arms exhibition,
firearms] Kazakhstan is on the verge of a profitable defence deal. Almaty's Kirov
machine-building plant has managed to make the Indian Defence Ministry interested
in the implementation of a project to upgrade torpedoes.
Specialists from the Almaty plant propose to modernize torpedoes which are
over 10 years old. The cost of the deal will not exceed a third of the price for
new torpedoes, and, the Kazakh side says, they will be able to serve for 30 years
more.
Also, Kazakhstan offers secret UTT [universal thermal torpedo] 2000 Pelikan
thermal missiles. Kazakh specialists say that these shells cost a third of the
price of Russian-made ones and a fifth of US-made ones, but are not second to
them in quality.
If the contract is concluded, it will be become the first deal to be so
profitable in the entire history of Kazakhstan's defence industry.
