The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is close to announcing its choice of two companies for the next phase of its Quiet Supersonic Platform (QSP) project.
Although QSP’s origins were linked to plans for a supersonic corporate transport, DARPA regards it as a dual-role programme.
Studies by Northrop Grumman and the US Air Force (USAF) suggest that QSP technology could lead to an efficient, heavy-payload, long-range supersonic bomber.
The campaign in Afghanistan, where B-52s proved essential, underlined the usefulness of bombers and drew attention to the fact that USAF’s bomber force has been underfunded in favour of fighters.
