Ukraine offers M60A3 upgrade to Turkey
CHRISTOPHER F FOSS JDW Land Forces Editor
Ankara

An extensive upgrade package for the widely deployed US General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) M60A3 main battle tank has been developed to the concept stage by the Kharkov Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau of Ukraine.

One early potenial customer is the Turkish Land Forces Command which has a requirement to upgrade its M60 fleet. Although the front-runner to date has been a proposal from Israel Military Industries based on its Sabra design, there are now at least three other contenders.

Besides the Kharkov proposal, GDLS is offering the 120S first revealed in Jane's Defence Weekly earlier this year and Turkey's FNSS Defense Systems has prepared an upgrade design. FNSS is the only manufacturer of tracked armoured vehicles in Turkey and has built almost 2,000 tracked vehicles in the last 10 years for the home and export markets.

The Ukrainian company is the prime contractor for the T-80UD and more recent T-84 series MBTs. To reduce risk and overall life cycle costs, proven sub-systems are incorporated in the upgraded M60A3 wherever possible. According to the Kharkov Morozov Machine Building Design Bureau, a customer can upgrade the M60A3 in the three key areas of firepower, mobility and protection or any combination of these.

The M60A3 is armed with a 105mm M68 series rifled tank gun and has a crew of four: commander, gunner, loader and driver.

Kharkov is proposing to replace the M68 gun with a120mm smooth bore gun which is fed by the bustle-mounted automatic loader which was developed for the export T-84-120 Oplot MBT. This would reduce the crew to three.

A maximum of 42 120mm rounds of ammunition are carried, including armour piercing fin stabilised discarding sabot -tracer), high explosive anti-tank -multi-purpose -tracer) and high explosive fragmentation). A laser-guided anti-tank round can also be fired to a range of 5,000m. This is based on the locally produced Combat projectile revealed earlier this year and originally developed in 125mm calibre (JDW 17 January 2001). A 7.62mm machine gun is mounted coaxial with the main armament and a 12.7mm machine gun is mounted on the turret roof.

A computerised fire-control system is installed that provides a high first round hit probability under day and night conditions.

For improved battlefield survivability, the turret and chassis can be fitted with a new armour package which includes a mix of passive and advanced explosive reactive armour systems.

The original AVDS-1790 series 750hp powerpack has been replaced by a new powerpack built around the compact 6TD-2 diesel engine developing 1,200hp. With a combat weight of 56.4 tonnes, this gives a power-to-weight ratio of 21.15 hp/tonne and a maximum road speed of 55 to 60 km/h. The compact engine allows an additional 400 litres of fuel to be carried.

A deep fording kit has also been developed which allows the upgraded M60A3 to ford to a maximum depth of 5m.
