Previously recorded fate
Soviet sources claim that the boat was sunk by the Soviet submarine Lembit. That Lembit story is very doubtful according to many sources. The Lembit is still afloat and shows no sign of any collision (the supposed sinking method) and its recent captain has stated that most of Lembit's official history is fabricated. So the cause of U-479's loss is unknown.
