BACKGROUND: The M829A2 APFSDS-T (KE) is the primary tank killing cartridge fired from the Abrams 120mm cannon. However, the proliferation of explosive reactive armor (ERA), which can be easily acquired, modified, and/or added to existing platforms as is, poses a significant challenge to maintaining lethality against threat systems. The M829E3 APFSDS-T (KE), which is presently in development and scheduled for initial production in FY 02, improves lethality against modern main battle tanks equipped with the latest generation ERA.
