Dostum's advance appears to have been made possible by an infusion of Uzbek government troops into his ranks. Uzbek
military sources say a 2,000-strong brigade of Uzbek troops were the backbone of Dostum's assault and another 6,000
are on the way.

Russian media, in addition to government sources, also reports that several hundred former members of the Russian
army have been hired to bulk up Dostum's forces. This group includes ex-paratrooper and special operations troopers, as
well as specialists such as tank drivers and artillery gunners

Sources in the Tajik Foreign Ministry also suggest that up to 800 active-duty Russian soldiers have been sent to bolster
Tajik forces in Afghanistan as well. These soldiers are filling specialist positions such as driving tanks and commanding
artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems.

It is even possible, though unconfirmed, that Russian helicopters and aircraft are providing ground support for Northern
Alliance operations. This idea was suggested by sources in the Tajik Defense Ministry and supported by CNN footage
last week showing a Russian Mi-8 helicopter with U.S. markings landing in opposition-held territory. If true, this would also
suggest Russia has deployed special forces to act as ground observers and to pick out targets.
