Unit YAMAM
The Taibeh Raid

The Taibeh raid is the unit's greatest public relation exercise ever, and probably the most photogenic Israeli SF operation ever.

Taibeh is a 35000 person Arab (Israeli citizens) populated city in the middle of Israel, not far away form the Tel Aviv.

Note: there is also a Taibeh village in Lebanon. Other then by name the two places have nothing in common.

In 03/03/2000, Thursday night, the SHABACH received information from Palestinian collaborators that a group of terrorists are in Taibeh, preparing for major attacks against big Israeli cities on Friday or on Sunday (the busiest days of the Israeli week).

Since Taibeh is within the Israeli borders and the operations was SHABACH's controlled, the takeover unit was YAMAM. Unit 217 was also called in as an engagement unit.

In 05:00 the unit placed a siege on the house and secured the parameter. Since there were no hostages present, there wasn't any rush to break in. The unit negotiators start calling the terrorists to surrender over megaphone. One of them did come out and surrender himself to the security forces. Few hours later two terrorists came out one holding a suitcase, and started approaching the unit's operators. Suddenly one of them drew a handgun. The unit's operators immediately open fire, killing the two terrorists. But in the suitcase there was an explosive device which exploded (probably due to the unit's operators fire). As a result of this explosion a Unit YAMAM operator, who stood up in front of the terrorists, was injured in is leg.

Several hours later when no movement was seen inside the house, a dog was send in to search for explosives. The dog found one and exploded with it. In order not to risk any more dogs, a police counter explosive robot was sent in the house and fired its shotgun at suspicious objects. When the robot found nothing, more dogs were send into the house and came out safe, without finding explosives.

At that time, since no hostages were present, it was decided to bring a bullet proof armored IDF bulldozer to destroy the house, burring the terrorists alive in the ruins. This technique is standard procedure when no hostages are present. When the bulldozer can't approached the house, the Israeli CT units simply fire anti-tank missiles at the house until it collapses down (usually the B300 missile made by IMI).

While the bulldozer is small arms bullets proof, it's venerable for high-power explosives, which can penetrate its armor and injure the bulldozer's driver. Therefore, the need to search the house for explosives (by the dogs and the police robot) prior to destroying the house using the bulldozer.

When the bulldozer (d9 type, belong to the IDF combat engineering corps) approached the house, a terrorist tried to fire at the driver and was taken out by a sniper.

After the house was totally destroyed at 17:00, unit 217 and Unit YAMAM stormed the ruins looking for the terrorists and found two bodies - one belonging to the terrorists killed by unit's YAMAM sniper, and the other killed during the destroying of the house by the bulldozer.

Total result of the Taibeh raid: four dead terrorists, one terrorist captured alive, one dead dog and one lightly injured Unit YAMAM operator.

The techniques mentioned here aren't rare, nor is the number of dead terrorists. What is unique about the Taibeh raid is the fact it happened in the middle of Israel, and not in a foreign country or in hard to get border zone. Therefore, the media (both Israeli and international) had full access to area and could broadcast live the entire operation. This was the opportunity for the unit's operators to show the entire very cool arsenal, they received during the Hefet'z time as the IP CO, including state of the art tactical vests and monocular night vision devices installed on the operators helmets.

The Taibeh operation was the first time an entire CT operation was covered by the media from the very beginning to ending.
