Equipment in Service
The Iranian inventory contains a mass of older Soviet and Western equipment that is almost certainly near the end of its useful life. Many of these systems have been cannibalised and the following are best estimates. The logistic chain will find servicing and supplying such a diversity of systems almost impossible.

Armour
MBT: 20+ Zulfiqar; 480e × T-72M/S; 250 × T-54/55; 250 × Type 59; 50 × T-62; 250 × Type 69-II; 40 × Chieftain Mk3/5; 90 × M47M/M48A5; 150 × M60A1; 100 × PT-76 light tank; Recce: 50 × BRDM-2; 30 × Scorpion; 100 × EE-9; IFV: 100 × BMP-1; 140 × BMP-2; APCs: 150 × BTR-40 variants; 50 × BTR-50 variants; 230 × BTR-60 variants; 45 × BTR-152; 100 × M113A1; 100 × Half track vehicles of various types.

Press speculation of T-90 (the export version of the T-80) main battle tank deliveries to Iran from Russia and Ukraine cannot be confirmed. Some T-69-II tanks may be converted to fit the Pakistani 105 mm gun. There have also been reports of deliveries of 500 T-55A(P) main battle tanks from Poland and that the M47/M48/M60 US-designed vehicles have been withdrawn from service to be converted into Zulfiqar tanks. China has continued to deliver Type 62-II main battle tanks, allowing new armoured brigades to be formed. Following a contract with the Russia state-owned arms exporter Rosvoouzhenie, a production line for the production of T-72 tanks was opened at Doroud, in the Lorestan province of western Iran in July 1997. It was believed that tanks built at the plant would be more sophisticated than standard Soviet models. It was unclear how many T-72s were to be supplied to the Iranian armed forces and over what period of time.

Infantry
Rifles: 7.62 mm G3; 7.62 mm AKM type; 7.62 mm Dragunov; 5.56 mm M16A; 0.30 in M1; Sub-Machine Guns: 9 mm Uzi; 9 mm H&K MP5; 9 mm Beretta M12; Machine Guns: 0.50 in Browning M2HB; 12.7 mm DShK; 7.62 mm MG1A1; 7.62 mm FN-MAG; 7.62 mm PK/PDK; Support Weapons: 40 mm M79; 30 mm AGS-17; ATGW: 1,000 × Shahine 1; 100 × 9K111 (AT-4); 100 × Red Arrow 8; 30 × Dragon; 250 × TOW; 90 × ENTAC; Anti-Tank: 200 × 106 mm M40A1; 200 × 75 mm M20; 150 × 57 mm M18; 490 × RPG-7V RL; 200 × RPG 22; 50 × 3.5 in M20.

The serviceability of US-made systems remains in doubt.

Artillery
SP: 18 × 203 mm M110; 30 × 175 mm M107; 120 × 155 mm M109/109A1; 55 × 122 mm 2S1; Towed: 25 × 203 mm M115; 30 × 175 mm M1978; 85 × 155 mm GH N-45; 80 × 155 mm M114A1; 200e × 130 mm Type 59-1; 800e × 130 mm M-46; 400 × 122 mm D-30; 30 × 122 mm Type 60; 20 × 122 mm Type 54; 20 × 105 mm M56; 180 × 105 mm M101A1; 80 × 85 mm D44; MRL: 45 × 122 mm BM-21; 50 × 122 mm Type 81; 90 × 107 mm Type 63; Mortars: 200 × 120 mm Soltam; 500 × 120 mm DIO; 150 × 107 mm M30; 900 × 81 mm DIO; 500 × 60 mm M19.

Captured FH-77 and G5 towed artillery is being upgraded but has not been returned to inventory; Russia and Ukraine delivered substantial numbers of M46, D-30 and 2S1 systems in 1994-95. In December 1997, Iran unveiled two indigenous new full-tracked self-propelled howitzers (SPHs), the 122 mm Thunder-1 and the 155 mm Thunder-2. It was unclear how many would be supplied to the army, or over what period.

Air Defence
SAM: 200 × Strela-3 (SA-14); 100 × Igla (SA-16); 50 × Stinger; 250 × Strela 2M (SA-7); 190 × HN-5A; 50 × RBS 70; 50 × HAWK; 20 × Rapier; AAA: 80 × 57 mm ZSU-57-2; 75 × ZSU-23-4; 258 × 23 mm ZU-23-2; 190 × 57 mm S-60; 50 × 40 mm Bofors L/70; 24 × 35 mm Skyguard; 250 × 85 mm M1939.

There appears to have been little change in the air defence inventory since 1994. Further co-operation with China is, however, expected to yield more systems.

Army Aviation
