Парочка зарисовок крестьянской жизни до и после революции со стороны

...точнее взгляд немца-меннонита, если так можно выразиться, неангажированный. Как грится, стоит принять к сведению как "белым", так и "красным".
1. Об отношении крестьян к правительству:
In general, the peasant was neither openly hostile to his government nor friendly towards it. He looked upon it as an institution that was out to get him. The best thing for him, he believed, was to avoid all contacts with the government and its officials. Nor had the peasant any confidence in the law. Exploited by the government, his church and the dishonest barterers, the peasant compensated himself with numerous and humorous folk stories in which he was always getting the better of his exploiters...
2. Насчет того, что творилось после революции и почему
During Worls War I Russian men up to the age of fourty-five were mobilized and the loss in manpower was very heavy. Many a peasant who had little or nothing to defend nevertheless had to lay down his life for the fatherland that treated him so badly. When the Czar was deposed the men came home bringing their weapons with them. The villages suddenly were heavily armed. Most of the peasants did not use these arms but a substantial number did. In many Russian villages bands of cut-throats claimed to be "fighters for freedom", but in reality they were merely ruthless bandits. They terrorized the villages for some time, but some of the villages rebelled and put a stop to this. I know of two large villages where the people rose against their tormentors, killing the bandits wherever they found them - in bed, on the street, or in their homes. There was no judicial procedure; the villagers just shot them or beat them to death. In each case a few escaped but they never again dared to show themselves in the village, knowing as they did that they would be killed without any preliminary discussions. ... 3. Любопытный пример как к тому относилась красная власть:
In our neighbouring village of Michaulovka various misdeeds were perpetrated. The village became highly agitated and a public meeting was held. The chairman of the meeting asked the villagers for their support, but at that time they did not know who was doing the robbing and murdering during the night. Following the meeting that night, the man who had been the spokesman was shot and killed in his own home. Some of the villagers then secretly contacted the Soviet authorities in the nearby city of Kherson. The authorities sent as few men to serve in the police force at Michaulovka as secret agents. After a while the district council of Michaulovka and the local police force, including its chief, were arrested and shot. These local officials had been leading the double life; they were officials during the day and robbers and murderers during the night.
4. Об отношении церкви и крестьян с точки зрения меннонита:
They [peasants] were usually illiterate in a religious sense also. I never saw a Bible in any of these homes. The peasant knew about the life of various saints, but very little about what the Bible has to say. The church tended to support the government and the privileged, and thus offered very little to these people. Church services were conducted in the Old Slavonic language which the common people did not understand. The priest, subservient to his superiors, was of little help to his parishioners. Services in the richlu decorated church... appealed to the senses of those participating, but offered very little to their minds and souls.
