A senior figure in the Russian bid to fulfil India's multirole combat aircraft (MRCA) requirement has expressed confidence that the MiG-35 "proposals for the Indian tender are better than our rivals'".
Yuriy Guskov, the director-general of Fazotron-NIIR, which is working on an active phased array radar system for the MiG-35, told the Interfax news agency in early June that the radar was close to entering its final test phase and would be ready for demonstration as part of the Indian competition.
"In the Indian tender, we need to demonstrate not only the operation of the active phased array radar within the MiG-35 fighter, but also the combat use of air-to-air missiles against air targets and air-to-ground missiles against ground targets," he said.
Bids to supply India with 126 MRCAs closed at the end of April. Field trials are likely to begin in 2009 after an evaluation committee, which is yet to be set up, has examined the bidders' documentation.
Guskov acknowledged that United States-based bidders Boeing and Lockheed Martin were more advanced in terms of radar development. However, he said Russia's willingness to share more technology with India than the US would boost the Russian bid, as would India's co-operation with Moscow on fifth-generation fighter development.
