Yugoslav Pilot Detained
[1 Jul 2001] YUGOSLAV AIR Force Major Emir Sisic was detained by the Hungarian authorities on May 9, in accordance with the international warrant issued at the request of Croatia. Mai Sisic was in Hungary on private business when he was detained. In 1994 a Croatian court sentenced him, in his absence, to 20 years of imprisonment. It was alleged that on January 7, 1992, he was piloting a MiG-21 from Bihac when he shot down an European Union monitoring mission Agusta Bell AB 206L in Croatia, killing the five occupants. According to Hungarian law, if Croatia does not officially ask for extradition within 40 days, he is free to go.
