Runaway Cherokee Causes Million-Dollar Damage
'I didn't mean to' probably won't be good enough
Sunday night, at Adelaide's Parafield Airport, a man was having trouble starting his Piper Cherokee. Apparently, he didn't have quite enough trouble.
After running the battery down with no decent results, he hopped out, leaving the throttle at what he thought would be a mild setting, and walked around to the front of the airplane. With a couple good pulls, he was satisfied, as the Lycoming sputtered to life. Then, it picked up rpm, and, as it cleared out, it picked up some more.
The now-perturbed pilot tried to get to the cockpit, but to no avail; the plane trundled off by itself, not quite fast enough to fly, but plenty fast enough that the gasping pilot couldn't catch it.
By the time it had gone a hundred yards, though, it was under control -- under the control of other helpful aircraft on the field, who had seen it as their duty to try to slow down, and eventually stop, the renegade Piper.
By the time everyone caught up to the pilotless airplane, it had hit four airplanes, doing varying amounts of damage; and it had finally stopped against a fifth, damaging it heavily. The Cherokee itself did not evade the repairman, either: total estimated damage for the short taxi: $1.5 million Australian.
All the other planes are owned by the South Australian Flying School.
