Leutnam Hans-Joachim Birkner—his
career as a fighter pilot was unique. He flew
in JG 52 and his first opponent fell on
October 1, 1943. A year later, on October 14,
1944, he had scored 100 aerial victories in
joint missions with Rail or Hartmann.
Birkner received the Knight's Cross on July
27, 1944, after 98 victories. Leutnant Birkner
scored 117 victories in all, on only 284
missions. He died as Staffelfuhrer of the
9./JG 52 when his plane crashed on takeoff
on account of engine trouble.
