The Megiddo Military Prison was formed as a temporary detention facility during the Israeli invasion to Lebanon in 1982 (Operation Peace Of The Galil), in order to host captured terrorists. As a temporary setup, no buildings were build and all the inmates were placed in tents.

During the following years, most of the inmates were released in various exchange deals and the prison was due to be closed. But then the Intifada (the Palestinian uprising against the Israeli regime in the Occupied Territories) broke in 1987. In the following years inmates were again hosted in the facility and the closure was postponed.

After the Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement in Oslo, Norway 1993, more then half of the 1300 inmates held in the Megiddo prison were released and again the prison was due to be closed. However, in the years to follow many severe terror attacks were committed against Israeli civilians and again the prison accepted new imamates.

Without an alternative facility that could accept the current inmates, the prison remains open to this very day despite the severe hazards it generate. After almost 20 years of a temporary status, the prison is to an extent a ticking bomb. On the on hand it contains 800 of the most dangerous inmates in Israel - all of which are hard-core fanatic terrorists. On the other hand part from the most high-risk 60-70 inmates, which are held at a separate extra secured building, all the rest of the inmates live in tents. Moreover, the prison is located less then half a mile from civilian population, in the form of two Kibbutzim, plus it's only couple miles away from the Palestinian Authority’s borders.

All of these risks mean that the chances for an escape and a hostage rescue situation, either within the prison (involving guards) or out of it (involving civilians), are especially high.

This extreme security situation leads to the intense security procedures surrounding the jail. Not only an unparallel number of more then 200 guards (most of them reserve MP personal) secure the parameter, but also Force 100 - a SF element, dedicated exclusively to this one prison needs - have been created.
