Indian Air Force uses new system to track spares

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has introduced into service an integrated materials management online system (IMMOLS) developed by the private sector, which enables it to overcome persistent problems with aircraft spare parts.

Several IAF aircraft types, particularly those of Russian origin, have been frequently grounded due to recurring problems related to the timely location of spares.

Designed by Tata Consultancy Services in Bangalore for INR550 million (USD12.2 million), IMMOLS will link all 130 IAF bases across India.

"It [IMMOLS] will make the IAF more equipped, agile and robust to effectively handle any contingencies as well as benefiting from better cost management," Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee declared in New Delhi when inaugurating the system.

It will give IAF fighter commanders "total asset visibility" at the push of a button, he added. Air Chief Marshal SP Tyagi said: "The new system will aid in realising the IAF's vision of a lean and dynamic logistics organisation by embedding the three core concepts of total asset visibility, transit asset visibility and auto information triggers."

It will help give the IAF flexibility, he added.

Conceived over a decade ago, IMMOLS was activated in 2003 after a pilot project was implemented involving 22 IAF bases.

Tata Consultancy Services Chief Executive S Ramadorai said his company would offer similar online inventory management to the army and navy as part of the burgeoning synergy between the public and private sectors.

India's defence services have been pushing for greater private industry participation.
