Germany in Deal To Supply Tanks to Turkey

Germany has finalized a long-delayed deal to sell 298 surplus Leopard 2 battle tanks to Turkey, a spokesman at the German Defence Ministry said Nov. 8.
The spokesman declined to give a price for the sale, but a separate agreement in August to deliver 333 Leopard tanks to Greece was valued at 270 million euros, including maintenance and other supplementary costs.
German defense group Krauss-Maffei Wegmann will now modernize the tanks, part of the country’s heavy armored forces that were built up during the Cold War and which the government has vowed to sell or mothball.
The issue of arms sales to Turkey has been sensitive in Germany because of concerns over Turkey’s commitment to human rights and its treatment of minority groups such as Kurds, although Turkey is Germany’s partner in NATO.
Members of the pacifist Greens, junior partners to Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder’s Social Democrats in the outgoing government, had opposed arms sales to Turkey in the past.
But the opposition has softened over the past year in the run-up to Ankara opening membership negotiations with the European Union last month.
