Tank vs Tank", Kenneth Macksey.

Краткое содержание по-аглицки:

+++
M-26 Pershing: 41 Tons. 30 MPH. 102mm sloped frontal armor. 1x90 mm main gun.

JS2: 46 Tons. 22 mph. 160 mm sloped frontal armor. 1x122mm main gun.

There are gunnery tables in the book that are very revealing. They show at what ranges the main guns of different tanks could penetrate the armor of enemy tanks, with high velocity ammo. This is at 30% normal angle of impact. The JS2 could penetrate Panther D armor out to 1500m. It could penetrate the Tiger II only at 200m and below.

There are no charts fo tank to tank with the Pershing and JS2, but we can compare the two against common opponents.

The Pershing could penetrate the Panther D out to 2000+m. The Tiger II out to 1300m.

The reason for the disparity? It looks to me like the lack of an armor piercing discarding sabot round hurt. The JS2's 122 mm gun fired a APCBC round at 747m/sec. The 90mm gun on the Pershing could fire a HVAP shell at 1120m/sec.

It is clear that both tanks could take the other out. An argument over which was "better" would be pointless. Both could be effective vs the other. Not the case with the M-4 Sherman, which was almost obsolete by war's end.
