>Thousands of young men died in Bf110s Jost their lives in accidents, like aerial collisions. One of these was Hauptmann Willi Hachfeld, Kommandeur of III/ZG2, who was killed on 2 December 1942 when his Bf110 collided with another Bf110 landing at Bizerta in Tunisia.
>Six months before him Oberfeldwebel Otto Polenz died when the Bf110 he was flying (3U+BS) was rammed by another Bf110 near Derna in Libya.
>In 1942 he was stationed near Derna in Libya and mostly flew cover missions for the aerial supply aircraft but he also flew against Malta. He obtained a few victories during aerial combat until on 1 June 1942 he met his fate and was shot down. At least that was what the Luftwaffe said, but his comrades said that a panicking young Leutnant rammed his aircraft.
